Glimpses of other people’s lives

Whether I’m poking my head round the corner of an alleyway, or peering through a door ajar, I’m always interested in catching glimpses of how other people live.

I took this photo as part of an assignment for a photography course I’m taking at the moment. There are tons of pretty pictures of the brightly-coloured beach huts that dot Cape Town’s beaches, but I wanted to capture something different: the people around them. I wonder if these two friends walk along the seafront every day? How long have they been doing it for? What are their stories?

Reflection

Yes I could go on about how travel gives you time and cause to reflect on life, but actually this is another post about light.

A couple of years ago, good friends chose to get married in Elgin, about 45 min outside Cape Town, which meant that many of us used that as an excuse to head out of town for an entire weekend. On our way from my guesthouse to the church saw us take several farm roads – and rounding a corner of a dam, we were presented with this view of dead trees, reflecting on the completely still water. Unexpected and beautiful. (Elgin, 2009)

This picture almost works as well upside down. Go on, try it...
