The benefits of travelling out of season

I have to avoid the sun. Thanks to my Welsh genes I have the kind of skin that really doesn’t like UV rays. So often you’ll find me heading off somewhere around the time that everyone else is leaving it.

The upsides are much like going a little further off the beaten track than everyone else. Places are less crowded – and sometimes I might even have them to myself. Hotel rates are lower. Staff are less frazzled. And the images I capture are different from the typical shots that everyone else takes.

Cape Town, for example, is stereotypically sunny with clear blue sky. But in winter, is it beautiful too – somehow managing to be both subtle and dramatic.

Am I the only one who prefers the beach in cold weather?
